St. Peter’s College showed just why they mean business this season as they smashed Dharmaraja College with six tries to win their Dialog inter school League rugby match 34-7 at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy yesterday.
The Peterites could have easily run down more tries than the six they scored if not for some scrappy play at stages of the game in the second half as they needed 20 minutes to add to their 22-0 half time score-line.
The stalemate ended in the second half with 15 minutes left when Ranindu Ridmal crashed through the Dharmaraja defence after the Peterites decided to run a penalty awarded awarded ten metres away from the line.
Fighting a losing battle against the might of the visiting team, Dharmaraja made some desperate attempts to cross the Peterite defence and succeeded 10 minutes before the end when they ran a penalty from inside the 22 for an easy conversion making the scores 27-7.
But in the closing stages of the game the Peterites once again found their feet and firepower when Ishanka de Silva beat the defence and ran through for a try that was converted making the final score 34-7.
But the Peterites sealed the result even before the first half could end by scoring four tries one of which was converted.
For Dharmaraja it was their second defeat after starting off the season with a shocking win over Trinity College whom the Peterites will confront next Saturday at Pallekele.
