The Government has lost more than Rs.5 billion due to the scam of falsely entering registrations to the Motor Traffic Department’s computer systems without the Customs clearance, the Commission to Investigate Allegation of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) stated.
They further said that they have started an investigation regarding a Mini Cooper car which was illegally brought to Sri Lanka without Customs clearance at a loss of more than Rs.25 million to the government.
The vehicle owned by a finance company, was taken into the custody of the Bribery Commission based on an order of the Fort Magistrate, and was handed over to the Customs on Tuesday (29)for investigations.
The suspects have been identified and legal action is being taken against them. They also said that nearly 400 such incidents has been reported and it is happening for a very long time. Illegal vehicle imports will be further investigated, the Bribery Commission said.
