The Under-20 girls 4X100 athletics team of Gateway College in Colombo has been ranked overall ninth and 11th in the 4x400m in Asian rankings for the year 2020.

They recorded a performance of 48.51s and 4:05.17s respectively to achieve this feat according to the school.

Teams representing the armed forces and universities from Japan, China, Vietnam, Korea, Taipei, Thailand, India and Iran were ranked above the Gateway girls team which was the only junior team in this ranking.

The record breaking team is made up of Shelinda Jansen, Sadeepa Henderson, Filzah Farouk and Dahamya Liyanage.

In 2018, Shelinda Jansen who clocked 24.07 secs at the 200M Youth Olympics held in Argentina, was recognized as the fastest female athlete in Asia in her age group and the ninth in the world.

Her achievement was the third best performance in all-time Sri Lankan junior athletics history behind Susanthika Jayasinghe and Damayanthi Dharsha.

Only three school teams have recorded a timing below the 49s in the 4x100m in the history of Sri Lanka.

Besides the victorious team of Gateway in 2020, they include the teams from Gateway College Colombo and St. Joseph’s College Kegalle who achieved this feat in 2012.
