Selena Gomez to play an Influencer addicted to social media in “Spiral”

10 May, 2021

Selena Gomez is joining forces with Drake and her frequent collaborator, director Petra Collins, for a very timely new project — one where she plays a social media star who finds herself addicted to the internet and paying the price.

Deadline reports that Selena has signed on to star in Spiral, a thriller about an influencer "whose addiction to social media is causing her body to literally fall apart." The movie will be directed by Petra Collins and Drake is set to produce alongside his fellow Euphoria producer, Future the Prince. The script will be written by The Pisces author and Twitter star Melissa Broder, Petra, and Phoebe Fisher. No word yet on which streaming service this suspenseful film will make its debut, but we'll definitely stay tuned.

Though she'll be starring in a movie all about Instagram, Twitter, and the like, Selena herself doesn't actually use social media, despite being one of the most-followed people in the world. She told Vogue that she doesn't run her channels and has someone else post for her. “I woke up one morning and looked at Instagram, like every other person, and I was done,” she shared. “I was tired of reading horrible things. I was tired of seeing other people’s lives. After that decision, it was instant freedom. My life in front of me was my life, and I was present, and I could not have been more happy about it.”

Selena and Petra have worked together several times, including Sel's "Bad Liar" and "Fetish" videos.
