One of the most prestigious and oldest cricket playing clubs in the country, Nondescripts Cricket Club better known as NCC called off its Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for Sunday after realizing that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) paid the club Rs 12 million as fees for lawyers in a legal case not involving the club. The money was paid by SLC to NCC to be paid to lawyers appearing for them (SLC) in a case against Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe.
According to an official, SLC was compelled to pay the Rs 12 million to their lawyers through NCC as they (SLC) had come under heavy scrutiny by their own people over the payments of large sums of money as legal fees concerning several court cases filed by them. Objections raised by past presidents and the board of Trustees at NCC over the acceptance of Rs. 12 million as lawyer fees for outsiders triggered the postponement of the AGM according to an official of the club. It is also learnt that there had not been any written agreement between SLC and NCC over how the money should be spent officially as is the case when SLC provides money to clubs for welfare and other development activities.
