ASP Meril Ranjan Lamahewa, who was in charge of a special unit of the Criminal Investigation Department, has been transferred to the Hatton Police Station with immediate effect.

This has been done at a time when the CID is investigating the failed escape attempt of underworld criminal ‘Harak Kata’ who is under CID custody. Sources at the Police headquarters disclosed  that this transfer was implemented according to a decision taken by the Police chiefs.

A senior Police officer stated that Lamahewa had gone near the cell and talked to Harak Kata and Kudu Salidu at a time when only a group of designated officers were permitted to go to the area of the cell where they are held.

Apart from this, the transfer has been made due to information provided by authorities of the Criminal Investigation Department to Police headquarters on several issues, a senior official said.
