President Ranil Wickremesinghe concluded a successful visit to the US and Cuba, calling on leaders from the Global North and South to unite in the face of challenges such as Climate Change, Climate Financing, foreign debt and Sustainable Development.
President Wickremesinghe reached New York from Havana, Cuba, where he addressed the G77 Plus China Summit. In New York, the President addressed multiple summits including the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the UN Climate Ambition Summit (CAS) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Summit and also held bilateral talks with several world leaders and chiefs of multilateral organisations including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. He also met US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the UNGA.
Speaking at the Climate Ambition Summit on the sidelines of the UNGA, the President affirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to the Secretary General’s accelerated climate agenda. He highlighted the importance of tangible climate actions and commended the delegates for their valuable suggestions. In a significant address at the High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development – General Assembly, 78th session, President Wickremesinghe emphasized the critical issues facing middle-income countries in times of financial distress. The President was accompanied by Foreign Minister Ali Sabry, PC and several senior officials.
