The stage is set for the 104th Stubbs Shield All Island Schools Boxing Championship, scheduled to take place from September 25 to 29 at the Royal MAS Arena organized by the Schools Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (SBASL).

This championship is an integral part of the All-Island School Games and has garnered immense respect in the Sri Lankan schools’ sports calendar with over 350 promising young boxers from more than 100 schools in the competition.

The Stubbs Shield remains the pinnacle of school-level boxing in Sri Lanka.

The defending champions, Peradeniya Central College, will aim to continue their winning streak after a triumphant return to the podium following a 22-year hiatus.

Participation in this tournament is restricted to gold and silver medal winners in school-level competitions.

The competition will feature a total of 21 weight categories for boys and 15 weight classes for girls, ensuring that there’s an opportunity for boxers of all sizes and skills to shine.

The Stubbs Shield has a rich history dating back to its inauguration in 1914 when Sir RE Stubbs, the then Colonial Secretary of Ceylon, played a pivotal role by presenting the Stubbs Shield, sparking the growth of boxing in schools and nurturing the sport’s development.

Royal College Colombo, stands as the dominant force in the Stubbs Shield’s history, having clinched the title a record 19 times.

Their remarkable consistency is exemplified by their participation in almost every edition of the championship, with the exception of 1999.

Royal College boasts of winning the Shield consecutively for four years on two separate occasions, from 1944 to 1947 and then again 40 years later from 1984 to 1987. Vidyartha College, Kandy, holds a unique record, having secured the Shield for seven consecutive years from 1991 to 1997.
