Two Sri Lankan companies Ceylon Agro and Bio Technology Limited are exploring opportunities for the production of organic fertiliser in Kenya, using waste material.
A meeting in this regard was held last week with the Prime Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Kello Harsama, the Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Kenya, Kana Kananathan and the investors. An agreement was reached to forge a close partnership with Nairobi and the other County Governments in Kenya.
The meeting brought together various agencies of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Sri Lankan High Commission, underlining the shared commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability in the agricultural sector.
The Sri Lankan delegation, including entrepreneur Ravin Nawarathna of Ceylon Agro with expertise in organic farming and sustainable agriculture, expressed their intent to revolutionise farming practices in Kenya. The partnership is poised to promote sustainable farming practices by providing local farmers with access to premium organic fertiliser produced from readily available waste material.
By converting waste into valuable resources for agriculture, the initiative aligns with Nairobi County’s environmental conservation goals. “We are thrilled to collaborate with such visionary partners from Sri Lanka. This venture is in perfect alignment with our vision for a sustainable and prosperous Kenya. Together, we aim to lead the way in sustainable agriculture,” said Prime Secretary Kello Harsama.
High Commissioner Kana Kananathan conveyed his optimism about the project’s potential impact.
“Kenya offers vast potential for sustainable agriculture, and we are excited to contribute our knowledge and resources to this endeavour. We believe that this partnership will not only benefit Nairobi County but also Kenya’s agricultural sector as a whole,” said the Sri Lankan High Commissioner.
The project aligns with Nairobi County’s waste management goals, turning waste materials into a valuable resource for the agricultural sector and expected to stimulate economic growth in Nairobi County, creating job opportunities and fostering innovation.
The Prime Secretary expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration, highlighting its potential to positively impact the region’s agriculture and environment.
“This partnership aligns with our vision for a greener and more prosperous Kenya.”
