As the sun sets over the bustling streets of Colombo, a vibrant transformation is taking place at the Alliance Française, Colombo, marking the commencement of the 75th anniversary celebrations of diplomatic relations between France and Sri Lanka. At the heart of these festivities is a mesmerizing mural painting project with French street artist, Sandre.

Sandre, a Breton artist hailing from Paris, is renowned for her unique fusion of urban and technological artistry. With a background in animation, she has blazed her trail, gracing the streets of Paris, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Belgium with her captivating murals.

This year’s celebration continues the French Embassy’s tradition of inviting talented artists to adorn the walls of Colombo. Sandre’s surreal urban narratives, characterized by its vibrant colours and whimsical characters, will soon grace a substantial section of the Alliance Française.

Live art

The production of this breathtaking mural commenced on Tuesday, October 3, with the work open for all to witness. The intention was to transform the painting process into a live art performance that transcends boundaries and welcomes everyone to partake in the celebration of culture.

08The mural was unveiled on Thursday, October 5, at the Alliance Française, a culmination of artistic collaboration and cultural exchange.

The 75th anniversary celebration is a testament to the enduring bond between Sri Lanka and France. It is a time to commemorate the rich history and profound friendship that has developed over seven and a half decades. Through a series of events organized during the months of October, November, and December, both nations aim to strengthen these ties, not merely through diplomacy but through the universal language of the arts.

The program has been organized by the French Embassy in Sri Lanka with the invaluable support of sponsors and official partners.

Distinctive style

This mural painting project is part of a larger Indian-Sri Lankan tour in collaboration with the Wall Art Festival’s third edition. This partnership also extends to the network of Alliances Françaises in India and the Institut Français in India, a testament to the shared love for art and culture that transcends geographical boundaries.

Sandre’s distinctive style, at the crossroads of naive, surreal, and ironic narration, is characterized by an array of colourful and nuanced cartoonish characters. Working on a large scale permits her to unleash her creative freedom fully, bringing her eclectic cast of characters to life on the urban canvas.

Beyond murals, Sandre’s artistry extends to creating mappings for events and animations on immersive devices, such as her work at the Atelier des Lumières in Paris. Her work not only blurs the lines between urban and technological practices but also between reality and imagination.

As the paintbrush strokes continue to grace the walls of the Alliance Française of Colombo, there is a palpable sense of excitement in the air. This mural painting project is more than just art on display; it is a celebration of history, friendship, and the power of creativity to bridge cultures and bring people together. You may now witness Sandre’s artistic genius breathe life into the walls of Colombo, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished for generations to come.
