Police in the suburb of Narahenpita have been ordered by the Colombo additional magistrate Pasan Amarasena to arrest Kumara Dharmasena the former Sri Lanka cricket World Cup champion and now umpire at the current World Cup taking place in India.

Dharmasena had been involved in an incident in which he is reported to have broken into the premises of a house and threatened its inmates.Additional magistrate Amarasena had also ordered the arrest of Dharmasena’s wife and several others said to be directors of a company known as Pinnathenna Plantations.

The arrest order on Dharmasena and the rest of the suspects comes in the wake of a complaint filed in court by Malinga Fernando, the Managing Director of Ascent International.

Dharmasena is currently officiating in the World Cup now taking place in India as a member of the Elite Panel of umpires of the International Cricket Council.

According to a complaint made on August 17 with the Narahenpita police, Dharmasena along with the rest had entered the house in Narahenpita with firearms and threatened the occupants. Attorney at Law Nalinda Indarissa appearing on behalf of the aggrieved party told court that the Narahenpita police had disregarded the complaint against Dharmasena and the rest. One month and three days after the complaint was made, the respondent party in this incident also filed a complaint with the police on September 19 and the police did not pay attention to the complaint made by the complainant on August 17, it was brought to the notice of the court.

But Police told court they had not favoured any particular party in dealing with the complaints. After considering the facts presented by both parties, the additional magistrate ordered police to arrest the suspects including Dharmasena and produce them in court.
