Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Eheliyagoda OIC Priyankara Silva whose body was found with gunshot injuries.
Police are investigating whether he had taken his life. His wife had told police that he was upset over a family land dispute.
Since there is no official residence for the Eheliyagoda police OIC, the OIC had rented a room in a hotel adjacent to the police station.
Yesterday, October 21 morning, a police officer had gone to this hotel room to hand over the daily report to him.
However, the police officer had informed the other police officers that the OIC did not respond to his knocks or calls. Then they broke open the door and found the OIC dead on the bed with gunshot wounds.
A senior police officer said that a pistol had been used. His duty firearm and four rounds of ammunition were found on the ground.
The officer said that only one shot had penetrated his skull.
The police officer was a resident of Moronthuduwa. Police investigations are continuing.
