The darkest secrets tightly locked up in the closets of Sri Lanka Cricket appear to be coming out one by one like zombies.
The latest darkest came in the naming of Angelo Mathews who was asked to pack up and prop up a fragmented team at the current World Cup in India
A 35-year old veteran of 220 matches, Mathews according to the Selectors was not good enough to be there in the first place and now good enough to cover up the rot.
The episode exposes the fact that Sri Lanka never had a player management system in place and all that took place was that so-called elected officials and the government-appointed team Selectors managing their own selves making the most in a now or never scenario.
The continuous sidelining of Dinesh Chandimal who played youth cricket better than any other member of the team now at the World Cup is a classic case of player mismanagement or more likely player ruination.
The current Selection Committee, headed by Pramodya Wickremasinghe who was part of the team that won the country’s one and only ODI World Cup 27 years ago, must be the most shady of all Committees ever to sit in the cozy air conditioned board rooms at Sri Lanka Cricket.
It could not have been self explained any better than while all other teams in the World Cup announced their squads, Sri Lanka was the last and one player told the Sunday Observer that he waited for the last minute to pack his bags unsure of what was taking place.
The media cannot recall the last time a Selection Committee sat in full view of the public to answer questions and Wickremasinghe and his closed-door team will take its place in history as the most secretive.
