More new meet records

Asian Games gold medallist Tharushi Karunaratne of Ratnayake Central Walale was adjudged as the best female athlete while KVM Yasiru of Kahawatte MMV was adjudged as the best male athlete at the All-Island Schools Games Athletic Championship that concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Friday (27).

Tharushi came up with a record breaking performance in the 400m event when she erased her own national junior record clocking in at 53.21 seconds which she set early this year.

Yasiru of Kahawatte MMV established a new meet record in the triple jump event for boys’ under-20. He cleared 15.93 metres that gave him 1051 points to put him on top of the list.

Western Province finished as overall champions having accumulated 1224.5 points while Central Province were runners-up with 556 points.

Maris Stella and Lyceum International, Wattala won the overall boys’ and girls’ titles respectively at the Championships.

A total of 23 new records were established at the meet with the boys setting a dozen records while the girls also did well to set eleven new records.
