Minister of Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Pavithra Wanniarachchi opened the new Dayagama Walking Trail Entrance and ticketing office of the Horton Plains National Park recently with the entire infrastructure constructed at the financial cost of Tokyo Cement Group.
Minister Wanniarachchi said that only generous people like the Tokyo Cement can build the new entrance to Horton Plains at their own expense.
In the backdrop where it has become difficult for the Department of Wildlife Conservation to carry out such a construction, the Minister said that the Tokyo Cement Group’s work on the new Dayagama Walking Trail Entrance should be highly appreciated, considering that responsibility as a personal duty.
Tokyo Cement Group’s Managing Director S. R. Gnanam said that with the construction of this new entrance, the illegal activities related to the forest will become lessen, and protecting the forests is not only the responsibility of the Government, but also private institutions. He said that natural beauty and forests should be protected for future generations. Senior environmentalist Dr. Rohan Pethiyagoda said that with this new entrance, a great opportunity has arisen for tourists to see another aspect of the Horton plains, which is a tropical mountain cloud rain forest by hiking.
