Nine new meet records at junior athletics

DM Rajasinghe from Prince of Wales College Moratuwa stood out with his exceptional performance as he set his second successive new meet record, adding to the tally of nine new records established on the second day of the 52nd Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletics Championships held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. Competing in the Under-14 age category, Rajasinghe, who had already set a new meet record in the boys’ Under-14 Shot Put the previous day, continued his remarkable streak by establishing a new meet record in the Javelin Throw finals, clinching the gold medal with an impressive distance of 55.70 metres.

Notably, the under-13 relay team from Maris Stella College Negombo blazed through the 4x100m relay final, setting a new meet record with a lightning-fast time of 24.00 seconds.

In the boys’ 800m final for the under-15 age category, TS Costa of St Thomas’ Catholic International School Seeduwa clocked a remarkable 2:01.1, securing the gold medal and establishing a new meet record.

The day also saw further outstanding achievements as KGMN Dharmadasa of Sujatha Vidyalaya Mawanella set a new meet record in the under-14 600m final in a time of 1:42.6, earning the gold medal. Among the female competitors, A Samasthi of OKI International School Wattala displayed exceptional skill by throwing a distance of 31.10 meters in the girls’ under-14 javelin throw finals, securing the gold medal.
