Budding golfing trio steps ahead with improved display

Sri Lanka’s budding golf talents, K Dhanushan, Jevahn Sathasivam and Reshan Algama, displayed an impressive surge in their performance at the ongoing Selangor International Junior Golf Championship in Malaysia yesterday.

The young players remarkably bolstered their scores by 14 shots compared to the previous day’s score, propelling themselves two positions ahead to secure the seventh place.

Their combined efforts resulted in a second day’s aggregate score of 228, showcasing significant progress amidst a competitive field of junior golfers participating in the tournament.

In a field featuring 14 competing teams, the Philippines’ team, led by Jacob Cajita and Shinichi Suzuki who played rounds below par (67 and 69 respectively), along with Bobe Salahog’s improved score of 71, secured the leading position with an aggregate gross score of 207 after the second round. South Korea’s ‘B’ team slipped down one spot to second place, recording a second day’s gross score of 225, which was four shots more than their previous score.

Indonesia surged to the third position displacing Malaysia to the fourth slot.

The current standings in the team event are: 1st place – Philippines 430, 2nd place – South Korea B team 446, 3rd place – Indonesia 453, 4th place – Malaysia 453, 5th place – Thailand 458, 6th place – Selangor 469 and 7th place – Sri Lanka 470.

In the individual boys’ category, the competition remains intense. Malaysian-based Korean Kang Geon displayed a significant 10-shot improvement, securing a gross score of 66 in round 2, sharing the lead position with Jacob Kajita from the Philippines who recorded a gross 67.

Shinichi Suzuki stands in third place and Kartik Singh from India secured the fourth position with Bobe Salahog from the Philippines in fifth place.

The Sri Lankan boys performed well individually with Dhanushan achieving the best score of 74, Reshan Algama improving to record a gross 75 and Jevahn Sathasivam carding a 79, a considerable improvement from his first day’s score of 84.

Adhithya Weerasinghe scored 89 on the second day.

Their individual standings are: 19th position – Reshan Algama (79, 75), 20th position – K Dhanushan (81, 74), 36th position – Jevahn Sathasivam (84, 79) and 52nd position – Adhithya Weerasinghe (82, 89).

The Sri Lankan contingent hopes to give their best in the final round, aiming for an outstanding performance in the competition today (Sunday).
