Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Pvt) Limited which launched ‘Gold Route’ in August last year to provide a ‘premium airport experience’ for passengers who travel through the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).
As a new service innovation and value addition to the high-end passengers, the service product has contributed to earning approximately 130,000 USD (around Rs. 44 million) during the period of one year since it was launched.
The other objective was to contribute to earning additional foreign currency for the country and the revenue also helped to increase of Airport Aviation annual revenue.
With the view of increasing passenger facilitation at BIA, AASL has commenced several projects to enhance the capacity of the existing terminal.
Under that, 30 additional check-in counters will be established to enhance the passenger journey at BIA. In addition, a baggage make-up area will be developed and 6 satellite bus gates will be established to enhance the passenger service.
AASL is in the process of expanding the infrastructural facilities at BIA considering the short, medium, and long-term requirements. Accordingly, the road expansion project in front of BIA (Katunayake and Minuwangoda road) is nearing its completion and will facilitate the increasing traffic growth.
Meanwhile, local aviation sector also saw the increase in international passenger movements from 2022 to the first nine months of 2023 which is 37.32 %.
• The increase in international aircraft movements from 2022 to the first nine months of 2023 was around 21.87 %.
