North Central Province Governor Maheepala Herath said that the overall development in the North Central Province has been thwarted mainly due to the severe shortage of intelligentsia in the province.

The Governor was speaking as the Chief Guest at the ceremony held recently at the Anuradhapura Provincial Council auditorium to hand over letters of appointments to principals absorbed into grade 3 of the Sri Lanka Principals Service.

At the ceremony 325 teachers were given letters of appointments to remote schools after a few months training as principals.

The Governor said “The North Central Province is suffering a lot as a result of a dearth of executive grade or high ranking officials in Government institutes. There are only 64 officers in the Educational Administrative service in the province where there should be 197.

Of them, 14 officers are due to get transfers at their request. This pathetic situation is there in almost all other Government and Provincial Council institutions and departments.”

“It is reported that there are around 4,000 vacancies in the teachers’ service in the North Central Province and there is a dearth of educationally qualified persons in the province to fill the teachers’ vacancies from time to time.

It is my humble request, especially to the teacher community, that they should not be politically motivated stooges whatsoever and should preserve the dignity and the prestige of Disapamok generation” the Governor said.

The Governor said that he has requested the President, the Prime Minister and the Education Minister to intervene in solving the dearth of teachers in the North Central Province.

North Central Chief Secretary Chandrasiri Bandara, Secretary to Governor Sujantha Ekanayaka, Provincial Education Secretary Abyayalaksmi Hewapathirana and Provincial Education Director S.M.W. Samarakoon were also present.
