Veteran Sri Lanka cricketer Angelo Mathews unlike the team’s coach and captain took it upon himself like a true gentleman to ask forgiveness from millions of supporters who were let down by their shoddy performance at the World Cup.

Sri Lanka won just two matches from the nine games played one of which was against underdog Netherlands and the other against bottom of the table England.

But Mathews, whose keeper Sri Lanka Cricket did not lift a finger against his disputed time-out dismissal against Bangladesh, admitted nothing worked for the team.

“We did a lot of wrong things on our part. Cricket followers have always stood by us, win or lose they watch matches. We are sad and sorry that as a team we could not make them happy. We will put things right,” Mathews told journalists on his return with the team from the World Cup on Friday.

Not selected in the first place, Mathews made an instant impact when he grabbed two wickets against England as a replacement player that paved the way for Sri Lanka to win the contest.
