The Speaker of Parliament and many Government and Opposition parliamentarians congratulated Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha on his appointment to represent the Executive Council of the Asia Pacific region of the UNESCO Board of Directors from 2024 to 2027. He received 76 percent from 144 out of the 188 countries that voted.
In his message of congratulations, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said that Dr. Premajayantha was an erudite scholar in the full sense of the term and added that this is a great victory for him and for the country.
Minister of Transport, Highways and Mass Media, Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said being elected to the UNESCO Board of Directors is a very rare and difficult achievement and Dr. Premajayantha who won a large number of international votes for such a position, has a great opportunity to serve the South Asian region and the entire world. Minister Gunawardena said that he too extends his congratulations to Dr. Premajayantha.
Parliamentarian Sudarshana Denipitiya said that Dr. Premajayantha was elected to the UNESCO Board of Directors this year at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, and held the same position previously in 2008 and brought glory to the country.
A large number of MPs including Dullas Alahapperuma and Wimal Weerawansa also extended their greetings to the Minister.
