Richmond’s Thulnith wins scrabble title

Thulnith de Silva of Richmond College Galle emerged as the Junior National Scrabble Champion for the year 2023 after a good battle among three talented players.

The finals of the Junior National Scrabble Championship was held at the Sasakawa Hall last week while the top 40 finalists selected from Galle, Colombo, Kandy and Kurunegala competed in nine rounds to emerge victorious.

The promising player Thulnith de Silva secured seven game wins, maintaining the best margin in the category to win the title.

Dilmith having won seven games trailed by 12 points to emerge as the first runner-up. Archana Padumadasa secured third place with seven wins as well.

This was a good battle between Thulnith, Hivin and Archana but Thulnith showed his potential to clinch the title.

In fact Thulnith is a key member of the Richmond scrabble team as well as its baseball team keen to play both games as well as continue his studies.

Meanwhile Nishanya Gammanpila bagged the best female player award as well as the award for the best under-18 player in the tournament.

The Director General of Sports Professor Rear Admiral Shemal Fernando graced the awards ceremony as the Chief Guest at this event organised by the Scrabble Federation of Sri Lanka.
