Gold-medal winning Asian Games sprinter Tharushi Karunaratne was felicitated with a reward of Rs. 10 million presented by former Olympian Silver medallist Susanthika Jayasinghe at a ceremony held on Friday.
The money was a donation from Sri Lanka Cricket.
Tharushi won gold in the 800 metres at last September’s Asian Games in China.
Sri Lanka Cricket also donated money to other medal winners at the Games with Dilhani Lekamge, the silver medallist in the javelin throw event receiving Rs.5 million for her outstanding achievement and her coach Pradeep Nishantha presented with one million.
Susantha Fernando who also won a medal received Rs.2 million.
Six members of the men’s 4×400 metres relay team were presented with one million while each member of the women’s 4×400 metres relay team was also presented with rupees one million.
Sri Lanka Cricket in all donated Rs. 28 million.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Athletics is planning to send athletes for the upcoming marathon events in 2024 and will conduct selection trails on November 26 for these events.
