The men’s and women’s teams of the Western Province emerged winners in the Cup division at the Inter-Provincial Rugby Sevens tournament for the Governor’s Cup held at the Race Course ground yesterday.
The men’s team had Western Province come from behind to beat Central Province by 19 points to 12 after being held to a 7-all score-line at half time.
The second half saw the Western Province combine smoothly to find the openings for them to score two more tries to finish with a lead of 7 points.
Manula Ratnayake, Aaron Joshua and Ravindu Kulatunga scored the tries for Western Province.
Kaveesha Kaluarachchi and Arosh Ratnayake scored the tries for Central Province.
In the women’s Cup final too the Western Province routed Central Province by 36 points to nil in a one-sided game. Charani Liyanage scored three tries while Kaveesha Perera (2) and Kanchana Mahendran (1) scored the tries for Western Province.
North-Western Province won the men’s Plate event when they beat Sabaragamuwa by 19 points to 10 in the final.
However, Sabaragamuwa girls beat North-Western Province in the Plate final by 29 points to 10.
Northern Province emerged winners in the Bowl event when they beat Southern Province on the drop kick decider after the scored were 19-all at full time.
The Shield event was played on league basis and the men’s event was won by North Central Province with Eastern Province finishing as runners-up
The women’s event saw Uva beat Eastern in the final of the Shield event.
