Navy SC captain and coach from Kandy
Navy SC’s rugby side for the up-coming season will be led by Thilina Weerasinghe and coached by Nihal (Viper) Gunaratne. Both are from Kandy.
Weerasinghe initially schooled at Sarasavi Uyana College up to grade ten and started his sporting career as a eleven year old when he first touched a rugby ball. From there he crossed over to Kingswood College where he excelled in sports.
Weerasinghe was groomed further by Nilfer Ibrahim and Nalaka Weerakkody to become an outstanding player.
Gunaratne captained St. Anthony’s College and Kandy SC and donned the Sri Lanka jersey as a crack flanker.
Trinity weightlifters do well
Trinity weightlifters emerged winners at the Sri Lanka Novices Championship 2023, held at the National Sports Complex in Polonnaruwa.
Trinity lifters were in a position to secure first places in various categories.
Under-20 category-MJ Shabeer Ahamed –first place, KAST Karavita – first place, TSS Paranayapa –first place, DRS Umer –second place, N. Tanuj – second runner-up, Under-17 category – DMRS Dissanayake – first place, MAM Umair –first place, F Fazal – second runner-up, JS Navaratne –third place, PD Dissanayake –third place, O. Kodithuwakku –third place. They were coached by M. Wijerathne.
Rajans lose in quarter finals
Dharmaraja College lost in the quarter-finals of the Under 19 Division One Tier ‘B’ limited overs tournament when they went down to Thurstan College by 168 runs in their match at St. Joseph’s College ground, Darley Road in Maradana, Colombo.
The Rajans are this season going through a new phase in the inter school arena.
