Trinity cricketers on a roll

Kandy’s cricket lovers are to felicitate Trinity College cricketers for winning the U-19 Division One Tier A Inter-School Limited Overs Tournament 2023/24.

They successfully defended the title won last year.

This time the side was led by Manula Kularatne and was well backed by young cricketers. The coach Naveen Ekanayake had cleverly put the cricketers on the correct path with the support of Lakshitha Alahakoon-assistant coach, Bandula Pushpakumara- trainer, Lasantha Herath physiotherapist with the blessings of the principal Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara.

Kandy SC is ready

Kandy SC the king makers of club rugby are ready for the first game which is to be kicked off next Sunday at the Nittawela ground.

The team who are under the guidance of Fazil Marija, is in good shape and their fixtures are December 3 vs CH & FC at Nittawela, December 8 vs Army at Panagoda, December 17 vs Police at Nittawela, December 24 vs Air Force at Ratmalana, January 7, 2024 vs Havelock SC at Nittawela, January13 vs Navy at Welisara and January 21 vs CR & FC at Nittawela.

The captain of the side is Lavanga Perera, a product of Kingswood who can lead from the front.

Who cares about Kandy football?

Football in Kandy had a rich history of over 100 years when men who mattered and ran the game did a splendid job. The game in Kandy received step motherly treatment and is out of the big picture today. It is virtually dead and now some people will want to pass the buck.

Football lovers who served as officials and players now bitterly regret that the game is not what it was at one time with only a few schools up to the task.

Kandy had one of biggest leagues with over 40 teams participating. At present, the people who are involved in administrating Kandy football don’t know its history.

What is worse is that FSL has not taken any action to stop the rotten set-up. Years back, the controlling body’s president apparently kicked the game out of Kandy when in a surprise move he dissolved the hard working committee and appointed a new one. From that day on they failed to complete a single tournament in a proper manner.
