A comprehensive census on various buildings, business premises and houses constructed on railway reserves on the coastal line from Colombo Fort to Panadura has begun. Minister of Transport, Highways and Mass Media, Dr. Bandula Gunawardena has instructed the Divisional Secretaries and Railway authorities to present a full report within the next two weeks.

The Minister has also instructed the General Manager of Railways to submit recommendations with modern technology to carry out railway reserve measurement work in all parts of the country including the North and the East next month. Minister Gunawardena told officials at the weekly staff meeting that according to this year’s Budget proposals the lands owned by the railways should be effectively managed for revenue generation.

It has been decided to call for proposals from local and foreign investors for apartment complexes, hotel complexes and other mixed development projects in the areas near railway stations under the ‘Station Plaza Project’ in the Budget proposals.
