Left arm spinner Taijul Islam’s 10-wicket match haul took Bangladesh to their first home Test victory over New Zealand in Sylhet.
Taijul claimed 6-75 in the second innings as New Zealand were dismissed for 181 and the hosts won by 150 runs.
It was only their second Test win against New Zealand.
“Every time you lose, it’s not ideal but I think it’s just a sign of an ever-improving Bangladesh team,” New Zealand captain Tim Southee said.
New Zealand had started the final day on 113-7, chasing a total of 332.
But on a dry and turning pitch Nayeem Hasan dismissed Daryll Mitchell (58) before Southee (34) and Ish Sodhi (22) fell to Taijul to give him his second 10-wicket Test match figures.
“The job is half done, we still have a long way to go,” said stand-in Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto.
The second match of the two-Test series starts in Mirpur on Wednesday, December 6.
