Police SC pulled off an emphatic win by 41 points to 22 over Navy SC in their Nippon Paint League Rugby encounter played at Police Park yesterday.
Though Police scored six tries out of which four were converted and a penalty, the game lacked luster and excitement that a top division contest should have produced.
Navy replied with three tries, two conversions and a penalty but failed to put up a better defensive game that would have restricted Police from scoring more tries.
There were many stoppages and infringements committed by Navy SC in particular that gave away possession to Police more often than not.
Police started scoring in the seventh minute when they won a five metre scrum and opened out the game that made winger Sujan Kodithuwakku going over by the corner flag.
Prince Chamara kicked well from a difficult angle to collect full points. They scored again in the 12th minute when another three-quarter move made centre Hirantha Perera cross the line.
Chamara failed to convert this time.
Navy went storming into the Police territory and were awarded a penalty in the 16th minute and they took a quick short tap and forward Chirantha Wijesinghe sliced through for a try.
The reliable place kicker Thilina Wijesinghe failed with the conversion. Police came back strongly with their open play and in the 24th minute scored again as Lahiru Thillakaratne picked up a loose ball and went over the line.
Chamara converted and Police led 19-5 at that point.
Navy scored next in the 26th minute when they were awarded a penalty and Thilina Weerasinghe converted.
Police continued to open up the game thereafter and scored twice more through Matheesha Perera and Hirantha Perera and Chamara was able to convert the second try.
Police led 24-8 at half time.
The second half saw Navy SC pick up their game and passed the ball around more often to score two more tries and with two conversions they managed to increase their scoreline towards the finish.
Police opened scoring in the second half with Matheesha Perera scoring his second try.
Thereafter it was Navy SC who scored tries through forward Anushka Ramesh followed by centre Lahiru Herath.
Weerasinghe put over the conversion for these two tries.
Police managed to score only through a penalty in the final minute of the game when Prince Chamara attempted a 35 metre penalty with success.
