Students who have left school after completing the G.C.E.(O/L) and (A/L) examinations during the past three years will be provided with well-designed vocational training courses at the begining of next year Kurunegala, Kurunegala Senior Director of Education W.M.Balasooriya said.
Speaking at a recent meeting of Government school heads of the Kurunegala District, Balasooriya said 500,000 youths will be provided with job skills with regard to technology, agriculture and animal husbandry, building construction, healthcare, languages and tourism-related vocations.
More jobs are available for skilled workers locally and internationally. Nearly 150,000 young Sri Lankan skilled workers are expected to be sent abroad for jobs in 2024 by the Government.
He said these youth will be trained practically at Government Technical Colleges, University Colleges, Colleges of Technology, Vocational Training Centres attached to the NAITA and National Youth Services Council (NYSC) for two years. Nearly 5,000 well- experienced instructors are also to be recruited by the Government for this purpose.
Nearly 10,000 educational programs for parents and students will be held countrywide to educate them on the value of these training programs to ease unemployment in Sri Lanka gradually among the younger generation, he said.
He said the Government intends to invest Rs. 5,500 million for this long-term project.
Balasooriya said the G.C.E.(O/L) examination – 2023 would be held in May,2024 and the G.C.E. (A/L) examination – 2023 would be held in January, 2024 countrywide as per the instructions of Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha.
