After going through a stagnant period in the past two years Football Sri Lanka (FSL) claims it is looking to rebuild the game and administration.
President of FSL Jaswar Umar says he has sought the help of FIFA the world football governing body, to conduct a feasibility study and implement a strategic plan to go ahead.
A three-member delegation headed by FIFA Consultant Stuart Michal Regan, FIFA Lead Regional Office-South Asia Prince Rufus and FIFA Regional Technical Development Office-South Asia Chokey Nima were the officials who made a brief visit to the country.
FSL will engage with FIFA officials and study ways to set up a strong organization. The other three areas they will focus on developing are Commercial, Technical and Operation aspects. They also want to strengthen the legal issues and be back to a strong organisation with the support of leagues, clubs and other stake holders.
“We have to earn trust and confidence once again to carry forward a new era of Sri Lanka football. As a first step we have requested the support of FIFA and AFC and advice in the areas where we have to develop fast,” said Jaswer.
“As a first step we have to elect a new Secretary General who will act as the CEO to run the affairs and plan strategies and attend to all the work needed to lay a solid foundation to build a strong pyramid.
“He will also have to draft new laws that will help to strengthen the administration, promote the game among schools, clubs and even women’s football,” said Jaswar.
Regan said he was looking forward to turning a new leaf in the annals of football in the island.
“This new appointment will include a tournament director who will set the ball rolling in all areas of the country. This should be a long term strategy.
“Without the basic infrastructure it is very difficult to boost the game. Therefore, there is long process listed here which cannot be done overnight and will be time-consuming. Overall, FIFA has shown real keenness of restarting football in this country according to a well-executed plan,” said Regan.
Jaswar said they have laid out big plans for resumption of the game beginning next year with inflow of the funds granted by FIFA.
