The Volkswagen Beetle Owners’ Club Sri Lanka celebrated a significant milestone of the Club on December 10.

It was a glowing Sunday morning when they commemorated the 70th anniversary since the first import of VW Beetles to Sri Lanka. The venue for the commencement of the occasion was the courtyard of the Mount Lavinia Hotel.

The event kicked off with much fanfare as the Chief Operating Officer of MLHG, Anura Dewapura and Chef Publis Silva flagged off the parade. Over 65 Beetles made their way from the Mount Lavinia Hotel towards Galle Face on the Galle Road. With a perfectly lined-up convoy, they continued towards the Bank of Ceylon, reaching the Lake House Junction, and finally turning onto Mcallum Road. The left turn onto Darley Road was met with cheers and applause from the enthusiastic crowd as they headed towards the grand finale at the Bishops Gate Ballroom of the Excel World.

President of The Volkswagen Beetle Owners Club Sri Lanka, is Peter Jasinghe, a committed and passionate Club member who has dedicated countless hours to promoting the love for these iconic Volkswagens. Right by his side is Vice President Ruwan Punchihewa, another Beetle enthusiast who shares the same dedication and enthusiasm for the club. Together, they have steered the club towards this remarkable milestone, making it a memorable celebration for everyone involved.

The Volkswagen Beetle Owners’ Club Sri Lanka and the Mount Lavinia Hotel share a longstanding history and a deep connection. For the past 15 years, the hotel has graciously hosted the grand finale of the World VW Day Parade. This collaboration has not only showcased the vibrant beauty of the Beetle culture, but also strengthened the bond between the club and the iconic hotel.

Mount Lavinia Hotel is not just a stunning establishment; it is a place with history and stories that capture the imagination. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that it continues to support cultural and community-based events such as this one. The hotel understands the importance of preserving traditions, while also creating new memories for generations to come.

As the VW Beetle Owners’ Club Sri Lanka celebrated its 70th anniversary, the overwhelming joy and excitement was evident. The parade was a testament to the enduring appeal of these unique cars, as well as the deep camaraderie that exists among Beetle owners.

The Volkswagen Beetle is more than just a vehicle; it is an emblem of freedom, individuality and a zest for life. Its timeless design and unmistakable charm have captivated the Sri Lankan hearts for seven decades. As the Beetle owners cruised through the streets of Colombo, they carried with them the spirit of adventure and a sense of belonging that is truly incomparable. – DF
