South Asia Gateway Terminals (Pvt) Ltd (SAGT), Sri Lanka’s first Public Private Partnership container terminal partnered with the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) to conduct a beach clean-up at the Wellawatte beach recently. The initiative was held in commemorations of International Coastal Clean Up Day celebrated on September 16, 2023.

Team SAGT collected and segregated 193 kilograms of trash found on the beach which was then handed over to the authorities for recycling and appropriate disposal.

SAGT propelled the Port of Colombo as the pre-eminent hub for containerised trade in the Indian Ocean. Since inception in 1999, driving sustainable business has been a key objective at SAGT.

SAGT’s business operations are closely related the ocean. Therefore, this initiative is closely aligned with the Company’s commitment towards preserving and protecting the marine and coastal eco-system.

Raising awareness is key to the success and sustenance of ecosystem protection and conservation efforts. Through this beach clean-up initiative, SAGT sought to foster environmentally conscious behaviour and practices within the broader community with the participation of employee volunteers. The collaborative efforts of SAGT and MEPA underscores the positive impact through collective actions in protecting Sri Lanka’s coastal ecosystems.
