A house was donated to a mother of three by an anonymous Sri Lankan philanthropist domiciled in Australia.
The woman, W. Hemakumari who lives amidst untold hardships at Kukulewa village, in the Mekichchawa Grama Niladhari division was helped towards this end by Anuradhapura District Parliamentarian Uddika Premarathna.
The newly built house was handed over to Hemakumari at a ceremony at Kukulewa village.
She has not received any Government welfare hand outs except for being selected for the recently introduced ‘Aswesuma’ livelihood empowerment allowance.
MP Premarathna said that the tireless efforts of Anuradhapura District Planning Director Sugath Nayananda and Mekichchawa Divisional Development Officer R.D. Shanika Damayanthi paved the way to make this valuable donation a reality.
He said that this deed was an exemplary act to those who were financially strong enough to help those landless and houseless categories of low income families to have a plot of land or a permanent housing to live safely.
He said that in the Kukulewa hamlet, there were around 38 low income families deprived of permanent houses and 28 families were suffering from lack of proper sanitation facilities.
District Planning Director Sugath Nayananda, said that it was a tremendous achievement that the new house was completed within just six months at a cost of nearly Rs.1.5 million with the support of vocational training until of the Medawachchiya Divisional Secretariat office, the Kahatagasdigiliya Grama Shakthi Development Society and the Civil Security Department.
