No more cake-walks for rugby’s fancied

Kandy SC could see more red this season as they compete to defend their title while the inter-club League rugby season gathers momentum.

Kandy SC are not having the desired start they could have wished for in the current season and have yet to come up with a superlative performance while their closest rivals CR and FC are in no mood to play second fiddle.

While Kandy have had to struggle beyond expectations in the run-up so far, CR and FC or the Red Shirts are on a sound footing gradually picking up ahead of the all-important game against the defending champions.

From what has been witnessed so far, CR’s forwards appear to hold the edge over the rest of the teams in the fray and that is where they could make head-way.

Havelocks on the other hand have sunk in the points table with a defeat against the Dark Horse CH and FC, a team that looks set to cause some upsets and sleepless nights for rival teams.

From the looks of it, the Park Club will have more than what they planned to do this season and as things stand it will take more than just a team at play to make up for an unexpected defeat with matches against CR and FC and Kandy SC to overcome.

In their last outing CR’s forwards put up a sound performance against Air Force to win 29-5 and should they continue in the same trend, brighter days are ahead for the Longden Place lads.

Kandy SC had to throw in everything to beat Police 33-19 last week and they will not be able to hide the fact that they cannot take any team for granted and games against CR and FC and Havelocks could pose the biggest threats.

What can go in Kandy SC’s favour is that they generally don’t take chances against the big names and that is where both CR and Havelocks need to come up with something innovative on the occasion.

Also come some good news for Kandy SC fans that their team will not be taking any chances and have enlisted the services of veteran South African coach Yohan Taylor who is no stranger having guided them to win more than a trophy in the past.

As for Havelocks, their pounding at the hands of a revitalized Army SC, although they won 43-41, sent warning signals to all clubs.

What Army did to Havelocks was unexpected but it means they could do the same to any rival team, certainly a wake-up call that cannot be taken lightly.

Scoring six tries and losing was certainly something that can baffle the pundits.

Although Army lost, everyone was a hero in their team and it would be a tragedy if they are unable to build up on it.

CH and FC for once in a long time, given their famed reputation, are showing signs of staking a claim to the title even though they have lost a game.

The Maitland Crescent team has certainly gained the lost momentum but the road ahead like it is for all teams will have its ups and downs.

CH and no pushovers this season and the season has been made more competitive thanks to their presence. They had a clear-cut win over Navy (34-14) and that should give them enough drive for the bigger games ahead.
