Havies blow hot and cold as CR win

CR & FC came out with fresh ideas in the second half and got off all obstacles to finish with a rousing win over Havelock SC by 25 points to 10 in their Nippon Paint Rugby League encounter at Longdon Place yesterday.

With this win CR earned a bonus point annexed the Mathysz Trophy while remaining unbeaten so far.

After conceding a 3-7 lead to Havelocks at half time, CR played like a champion team in the second half with good ball handling and passing in abundance to give them possession.

They opened scoring in the 47th minute in the second half through a try by Gemunu Chethiya to take a one point lead 8-7.

Havelocks also kept the ball moving around and scored through a penalty in the 53rd minute. Janith Chandimal put over the penalty to give them the lead again 10-8.

Thereafter it was all CR who ran the ball around and used their burly forwards too to push them forward.

They scored in the 58th minute through a three-quarter move with Kaveen Sri Vikum going over.

They scored again in the 73rd minute when they set their backs into motion for Kushan Tharindu to go over the line.

Their last try was scored in the 76th minute when they forced a lineout and used the rolling maul with Lasindu Karunathilaka holding on to the ball. Thenuka Nanayakkara managed to put over the one and only conversion to give them an impressive 25 points to 10 victory.

The first half was completely dominated by Havelock SC who enjoyed immense possession. They also ran the ball around in abundance that allowed them to make advances towards the CR territory often.

In one such advance Havelocks opened scoring in the eighth minute when Udara Lakshan went over to score.

This try was converted by Samuel Maduwantha to take a 7-nil lead.

CR scored after that when an infringement in a loose maul gave them a penalty and Thenuka Nanayakkara put over the easy kick.

That was all the scoring in the first half.
