Kevin Michael Tissera, a former champion boxer of St. Mary’s College, Dehiwela passed away this week.
Tissera started off his boxing career by contesting the LV Jayaweera meet in 1975 as the Marians were crowned champions on the occasion. Tissera walked away with the best boxer’s trophy and his brother Dirk was also a member of the team.
They were the only two brothers to feature in the Meet at the YMCA ring in Colombo Fort.
Hanging up his gloves, Tissera joined the hospitality industry in Sri Lanka and was also employed in the same trade in the Middle East for some time before returning to Sri Lanka.
His friends and school mates also knew him as a man with a fine sense of humour outside the ring.
The youngest of the Tissera siblings, Denham, also boxed for St. Mary’s College in the 1980s making it a unique family of boxers from a school that once secured its place as a top notch entity in the all-island schools set-up.
