Jayasena back in the saddle
The Central Province Rugby Football Union re-elected Kavinda Jayasena as its president.
He is a rugby veteran from Trinity College and at present the coach of Dharmaraja College and has a Lion to go by for a colourful schoolboy career that led him to play for the Sri Lanka team.
In the year 2000 he first played for Kandy Sports Club and crossed over to Havelock Sports Club and captained the side in 2008 and 2011.
The Committee members are vice president Manjula Samarakoon, secretary Chaminda Yapa, treasurer Rifaz Rafeek, Sarath Ranaweera, Suranga Dela, Thushitha de Silva, Chamu de Silva, YMS Ratanayake, Lasantha Ediriweera, Nalinda de Silva, Sarath Madugalle, Anuja Mallawarachchi, Kapila Silva and Rajindra Gamage.
Kandy schools hard at training
All Kandy schools have started rugby training for the 2024 season.
Among the schools who are at practices are Trinity College and Kingswood College the school which takes pride for being the first to play rugby when they were known as Kandy Boys High School.
St. Anthony’s College, Dharmaraja College, Vidyartha College, St. Sylvester’s College, Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College and Sri Rahula College are also gearing up.
Kandy hockey gears for all-island show
The Kandy District Hockey Association say they are drawing up plans for an all-island inter club tournament in Kandy for which the president of KDHA Dr. R. Maheswaran, secretary M. Ashraff and the rest of the committee are giving their fullest support.
Today hockey is well promoted in Kandy among the clubs and schools for both boys and girls.
Snooker winners
Mohamed Bashith and Khalid Gazali were the champion and runner up at the snooker tournament held at the snooker parlor in Gelioya which was a pot black tournament.
In this tournament there were some good cuing. The champion was from Gelioya and the runner-up from Kandy who is just 15 years.
Trinity awards Lion and Colours
Trinity College presented the prestigious Lion and Colours awards for the year 2023 with the Lion presented to boxers T.M.W.N. Bandara and I.M.S. Faris.
Colours were awarded to Cadets I.G.D. Kirthisinghe, and D.M.K.G.B. Dissanayake, basketball players S.R. Godaliyadda, R.M.W.P.M. Ratnayake, B.M.J.T.B. Basnayake and K.A. Tennakoon, hockey players K.A.W. Pamunuwa, M.R.Y.V. Karunaratne and S.E. Dilrukshan, rugby players Thenuk Fernando, V.L. Venuka Kumarage, Ravin Illangaratne, Harith Samaraweera, Thisanga Dissanayake, Anuhas Kodithuwakku, Lankindu Herath and A.M. Jameel, football players Y. Hulangamuwa, D. Karavita and D. Peiris and swimmer S.D. Alexander.
Colours were re-awarded to sportsmen in athletics U. Manzil, R.B. Wanasekara, S. Aluvihare and S.N. Ranaweera, rugby players A. Manzil and Chamendra Dhanapala and swimmers S.J.S. Kumara, S.N. Ranaweera and Aaquil Anfas
