Our country is Sri Lanka. It is in the Asian continent, one of the largest continents on earth. Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean and is known as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’. It has food in abundance and many varieties grow in different areas of the country.
Vegetables and fruits such as carrot and avocado grow in the mountainous area and crops such as chillies, onions and grapes grow in the northern area.
Our country has many endangered species which are protected and are free to roam in their natural habitats. Since Sri Lanka is near the Equator there are no extreme climate changes, so many birds migrate to our country. Some of these birds are, the Paradise fly catcher or Sudu Redi Hora, Indian Pitta and Sivuru Hora.
Many of us may have noticed some special varieties of birds in the environment during certain times of the year. For example; the singing of the Koha or the Asian Koel during the season of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year is very familiar to many of us. Our country has many types of mineral resources such as gems, graphite, limonite and phosphate.
Sri Lanka is a remarkable creation which has been bestowed on the world by God.
Let us make our country a better place to live.
