Fumio Nutahara

Motor racing in Sri Lanka reached a new phase when the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDAR) welcomed the famous Japanese rally champion, Fumio Nutahara, for the Mahameruwa Rallycross at Giriulla in Kurunegala last Sunday, Januray 14.

According to SLARDAR, the occasion marked a significant stride in international collaboration, bringing in expertise to elevate Sri Lanka’s motor sports scene.

“Nutahara’s presence wasn’t just ceremonial,” a SLARDAR official said. “He played a pivotal role in training young drivers. This not only added a unique dimension to the Mahameruwa Rallycross but also positions it as a potential training ground for aspiring riders. The introduction of international champions as mentors could potentially open new avenues for young, talented riders in Sri Lanka”.

Amid the roar of engines, Ashan Silva’s exceptional skill earned him the title of the day, Best Driver, overcoming fierce competition from Ushan Perera while Kesara Godage’s dominance secured him the title of Best Rider in the absence of Jacques Gunawardena, who, ready for an international event in India, left a notable void in the race.

A noteworthy highlight was Shane Gunawardena, the president of the Motorcycle Federation, hoisting the FIM flag with the new logo marking a symbolic act that underscored SLARDAR’s efforts.

Mahameruwa Rallycross not only exemplified intense competition but also served as a platform for knowledge transfer, skill development and international collaboration in the realm of motorsports according to SLARDAR.

Beyond the thrilling races, what set Mahameruwa Rallycross apart from the rest was its one-of-a-kind circuit.

“This motor sports oasis boasts all amenities imaginable, from restaurants and pools to accommodation and leisure activities.

“The circuit doesn’t just deliver a racing spectacle it creates an immersive experience, inviting enthusiasts to indulge in the luxury of motor sports amid the picturesque landscape of Mahameruwa.

“This unique blend of top-notch racing and leisure facilities positions Mahameruwa Rallycross as a destination that transcends the traditional boundaries of motor sports events”, an official said.
