Kandy hockey returns

The Kandy District Hockey Association will conduct an All Island inter-club 6s hockey tournament for the Independence Cup, which will be held on February 3. Twenty teams are expected to take part and will be held at the Peradeniya Campus ground. Entries are open till January 30. The entry fee will be Rs. 10,000 for each team. More details can be obtained from Dr. Rasiha Maheswaran, Mohamed Ashraff and Danushka Hearth.

Each side shall each have a maximum of eight players. Six players are permitted on the pitch and the remaining two players can be substituted at any time.

Kodithuwakku to lead Trinity rugby

Trinity College will be led by Anuhas Kodithuwakku. This is his fourth year and is an intelligent back division player. He is also a good athlete. He will be supported by the two vice captains in Thisanga Dissanayake and Ravin Ilangaratne and nearly forty players are turning up for training. Their most looked forward to game is the Bradby Shield against Royal College which will be the 78th encounter.

Antonians halted due to rain

St. Anthony’s College registered two wins from two games and their third game against Central College Jaffna was not played due to rain.

In their first game they beat Dharmaraja College by an innings and in the second game beat Ananda College by ten wickets at Katugastota. This win in Kandy is after their win in 1948.

The Antonian cricketers in the squad are: Thisara Ekanayake (Captain) Induwera Galapitge, Kaveesha Piyumal, Janith Rathnasiri, Charuka Ekanayake, Kevan Fernando, Dinura Ganegoda, Bimash Samarasinghe, Anjana Weerasekara, Dasun Weliyanga, Nedan Ebert, Tishan Fernando, Mohamed Bilal, Desandu Bandara, Rumesh Seneviratne and Nikil Abilash. They are coached by Kavinda Jayasuriya and assisted by Lahiru Seneviratne.

Trinity-Antonian 105th cricket match

Trinity and St. Anthony’s will play their traditional match on March 15 and 16 at the Asgiriya Stadium. Known as the hill country’s Battle of the Blues, it is one of the most looked forward to events in Kandy.

Performance wise both sides are on par but anything can happen. Trinity College leads in the series with an overall tally of 23 wins while St. Anthony’s College has won 11 and 70 have ended in draws.

The one day encounter is fixed for March 23 at Katugastota. This one day series commenced in 1980 has been a regular fixture except for 2001, 2020 and 2021.
