Kenya’s Agnes Ngetich became the first woman to run 10km in under 29 minutes as she won the Valencia Ibercaja road race in Spain.

The 22-year-old triumphed in 28 minutes 46 seconds, beating Ethiopian Yalemzerf Yehualaw’s 2022 road world record by 28 seconds. Compatriot Emmaculate Anyango also ran under 29 minutes, finishing second in 28:57.

“I’m so happy. I didn’t expect this world record,” Ngetich said.

“I was coming to improve my time, at least somewhere around 29:14, but I am happy that I ran a world record.”

Ngetich equalled Beatrice Chebet’s 5km world record of 14:13 in a women’s-only race, which she set two weeks ago. Ngetich’s 10km time bettered the women’s 10,000m track world record of 29:01.03 held by Ethiopia’s tesenbet Gidey.

Ngetich set the 10km world record in a women’s-only race in September with a time of 29:24.
