Wijemanne and Nilaweera better than Israel-Japan duo

Sri Lanka’s doubles pair of Methvan Wijemanne and Vichinthaya Nilaweera won the gold medal in the boys’ doubles event at the ITF Junior Circuit Under-18 Tennis Tournament at the end of the first week at the SLTA courts at Sri Marcus Fernando Mawatha, Colombo on Friday.

They defeated the top seeded pair of Uri Gilon of Israel and Riku Higashi of Japan in the final in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

The Sri Lankan pair displayed exception skills throughout the match. They made a grand start that gave them the psychological advantage when they took a 4-0 lead in the first set.

The second set saw their opponents rally around but the Sri Lankan pair got back through some intelligent team work to win the keenly contest set, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Methvan Wijemanne missed out on winning his second medal when he lost in the singles final in straight sets to Kevin Suresh of India 6-4, 6-0.

This was despite a valiant effort by Wijemanne before going down in a hard fought contest.
