Kinds of nouns

A noun is a word used as the name of a person, place or thing.

Proper nouns

A proper noun is the name of some particular person or place. Proper nouns are always written with a capital letter at the beginning.

Persons: William Shakespeare, John Milton, Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin, Parakramabahu, Oliver Twist, Daniel Defoe, Narendra Modi, Abdul Kalaam

Places: London, New York, Tokyo, Colombo, Japan, England, India, Anuradhapura, Kandy, Galle, New Delhi, Korea, Taiwan, Moscow

Common nouns

A common noun is a name given in common to every person or thing of the same class or kind.

Teacher, child, doctor, farmer, policeman, thief, judge, baby, man, woman, girl

Collective nouns

A collective noun is the name of a number of persons or things taken together and spoken as one whole. There are many collective nouns in English. Here are some of them:
