Major drug bust at Enderamulla

One person was arrested on Friday along with a large haul of controlled drugs without a valid licence at Enderamulla, Wattala, police said yesterday.

He is a 40-year-old resident of Badulla.

The arrest was made during the ongoing island-wide Yukthiya operation to crack down on drug distribution and criminal offences.

According to the police, the suspect was taken in for questioning with 192,000 capsules of 150mg Pregabalin worth about Rs. 100 million.

The detection was made by personnel from the Special task Force (STF) who were working on intelligence inputs.

The police and Security Forces personnel arrested another 770 suspects within 24-hours that ended at 12.30 a.m. yesterday (Feb 3) under the Yukthiya operation.

Among those arrested were 567 suspects for narcotic-related charges and 203 others who were on the list of wanted criminal suspects.

According to the police, the narcotics seized during the Yukthiya operation that began on Christmas Eve last year includes 11kg. 6 gms of heroin; 8 kgs .378 gms of Methamphetamine (Ice); 297 kgs of Cannabis; 2,110,500 Cannabis plants; 119kg 600g of Mawa; 35kgs. 800g of hash; 1kg. 70 gms of Hashish; 3 kgs .700g of Thul; 555 gms of Kush cannabis and 72,272 narcotic pills.

More than 25,000 persons mainly drug addicts and criminal elements have been rounded up since the start of the operation and the Public Security Minister Tiran Alles has vowed to continue the program despite opposition from several quarters.

The suspected drug addicts will be sent to State rehabilitation centres throughout the country.
