Rugby referees elect office-bearers

The Central Province Rugby Referees held their Annual General Meeting last Sunday at the Water Front Hotel and this time a product of Nugawella Central, Deepal Punyawardane was elected as the president.

He takes over from Mohamed Faizal who did a good job in the last two years.

Punyawardana is blessed with a good committee and are sure to give their best.

President: Deepal Punyawardana, Vice Presidents: YMS Ratnayake, Mahesh Guanaratne, Secretary: Kapila Wadiyathilake, Treasurer: Amila Rajakaruna.

Committee: Ishanka Abeyakoon, Chanika Silva, Kanishka Herath, Udeshika Abeyasinghe.

Kandy and Defence Services joint champs

Kandy Hockey Association women’s team ended as join champions with Defence Services in the 25th senior women’s hockey national championship.

In the final Kandy HA met Defence services and it was a 1-1 draw. Sandya Dayananda scored for Kandy DHA and Vimukthini Kaluarachchi scored for Defence Services.

Kandy Hockey Association’s Sakunthala Illeppruma was the women’s best goal keeper and Imesha Weerabahu of Defence Services the best player.

Kandy school cricket gears up

Traditional cricket fever has hit Kandy and all the schools here are gearing up for the occasion.

The Trinity-Antonian match called the Battle of the Blues will take place on March 15 and 16 at the Asgiriya stadiuim.

The Dharmaraja-Kingswood Battle of the Maroons match will be played for the 117th time while Vidyartha and St. Sylvester’s will clash for the 65th time in the Battle of the Babes.

Vidyartha has not being able to win this match for 57 years.

There is also the Sri Rahula-Sri Sumanagala Battle of the Golds match that was not played for some time, the match between Madeena Central College and Al Azhar College, Teldeniya National School versus D.S. Senanayake College and Nugawela Central College versus Walala A. Ratnayake Central College.

KDHA hockey

The Kandy District Hockey Association conducted a tournament called the Independence Cup Sixes at the Peradeniya University grounds under the direction of its president R. Maheswaran, Secretary M. Asharaff, D. Danushka Herath and the Committee.

Over 20 teams contested the promotional event.
