Sri Lanka’s budding divers take deep plunge in India

Nine Sri Lankan divers will leave for India to contest a championship called the Youth Aquatic Sports Meet in New Delhi starting on February 7.

Two of the tour party members are siblings, Matheesha Marambe from Royal College and his sister Kithmi Marambe from Bishop’s College who are two of the most promising young aquatic exponents in the country.

The Sri Lanka boys’ youth diving team comprises Matheesha Marambe (captain), Mikhail Jayaweera, Yusuf Shihar, Ruel Wickramarathne, and Venuka Kankanamge all from Royal College while the girls team comprises Kithmi Marambe (captain), Vinudi Kankanamge (Visakha Vidyalaya), Shania Silva (Bishop’s College) and Kisara Ranawaka (St. Bridget’s Convent).

Sri Lanka’s diving legend, Janaka Biyanwila, joins the squad as the technical official and Chanaka Wickramasinghe as the coach.

The tournament is organized in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Foreign Ministry, Indian Foreign Ministry and Sri Lanka Sports Ministry providing all facilities free of charge.

The participating countries are host India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

According to an official the occasion is significant for the Sri Lanka youth teams as they will also compete in the 11th Asian Age Group Diving Championship scheduled to be held from February 26 to March 9 in New Clark City, Capas Tarlac, Philippines.
