My country is Sri Lanka. It is an island in the Indian Ocean and is also known as the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean”. It is a multi-cultural and a multi- ethnic country. There are four religions in my country.

There are Buddhist, Hindu, Islamists and Christians. People of all religions live in peace and harmony. We export tea and rubber.

Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte is the administrative capital and Colombo is the commercial capital.

My country has many important harbours and this helps international trade. The country is divided into nine provinces and 25 districts.

Our national flag, national anthem and emblem provide an identity to everyone. Our national flower is the blue water lily (Nil manel) and the national tree is the Ceylon Ironwood (Na) and the national bird is the Sri Lanka jungle fowl (Wali kukula). The national animal is the giant squirrel (Dadu lena). Our national butterfly is the Sri Lankan birdwing and the national gem is the blue sapphire.

Sri Lanka’s longest river is the Mahaweli and the highest mountain is Piduruthalagala. Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are ancient capital cities in my country. Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress built by King Kashyapa. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a famous religious place in Sri Lanka and it is in Kandy.

My country is very beautiful. I love my country very much.
