“Home Grown School Feeding” school children’s nutrition program has been successfully implemented in the Anuradhapura district. Under this nutrition security program, village level suppliers are provided funds, techniques and materials to supply eggs, fresh vegetables and fruits to schools to feed schoolchildren to save them from widespread malnutrition.
The World Food Program (WFP) is extending its financial patronage for the program in North Central Province jointly with the District Secretariat, Provincial Animal Product and Health Department and educational authorities.
Anuradhapura District Secretary Janaka Jayasundara after an extensive fact-finding tour in the Horowpothana and Kahatagasdigiliya Divisional Secretariat (DS) divisions where the WFP funded “Home Grown School Feeding” program is very successfully implemented told the Sunday Observer that the program implemented only in 16 DS divisions will be extended to the other six DS divisions, Nuwaragam Palatha East, Thalawa, Thambuththegama, Rajangane, Galnewa and Nachchaduwa in 2024.
He said, “Under the auspices of the World Food Program in 2023, we have incurred Rs. 66 million in 16 DS Divisions to start poultry farms and home gardens to implement the “ Home Grown School Feeding” venture.
Each poultry farm owner is provided with 55 chicks free and funds to construct poultry farms. In addition, assistance is also given to maintain home gardening programs.
