The World Bank and the American Aid Program (USAID) have pledged support, offering facilities to the Attorney General’s Department to boost President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s law reforms program.
This agreement, reached during a discussion between the President’s Chief of Staff Sagala Ratnayaka and officials from both institutions, prioritises filling the vacancies of legal drafters and translators. It has been decided to fill the vacancies of legal drafters and legal translators as the initial step of the discussion at the President’s Office.
It has been decided to formulate new laws and amend the laws under the new reform programs. Therefore, the vacancies hindering their prompt implementation will be filled with the assistance of the World Bank and the United States.
Recognising the urgency, the plan leverages the expertise of recently retired legal professionals. Their salaries and allowances will be funded by the World Bank and USAID, injecting much-needed manpower into the department.
Chief of Staff Ratnayaka stressed the need for immediate action, calling upon the institutions to launch the initiatives without delay.
